A local lawmaker has proposed legislation to regulate what many consider a dangerous sport.
Mixed martial arts is growing in popularity and more and more amateurs are getting involved, with events being held in back hards and bars.
Representative Dave Agema, a Republican from Grandville, says there are no consistent rules to the sport and he hopes his new proposal helps regulate it.
Some people are renting barns, renting a facility, throwing these fights and making lots of money, said Rep. Agema, and these kids are getting hurt.
Under the bill the regulations would be similar to the professional MMA fight standards. It would give the commission the ability to license promoters and remove their license if they’re doing things they’re not supposed to.
