Last weekend was wildly busy for MMA, with three UFC’s back to back, and another on Wednesdays. This weekend was wildly busy for submission-only grappling events.
Saturday featured the Eddie Bravo Invitational 7, broadcast on UFC Fight Pass from The OrpheumTheatre in Los Angeles, California on Saturday. Sunday was Chael Sonnen’s debut Submission UnderGround, broadcast on FloCombat.com from the Roseland Ballroom in Portland, Oregon, using EBI rules, but in a cage. The SUG went head to head with the first submission-only event to break through, Ralek Gracie’s Metamoris.
However, the G-in-a-gi‘s event has run into quite serious problems, most notably with not paying athletes.
“I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today,” is not a winning business plan.
The 7th installment started late, and broadcast draw after draw after draw after draw after draw. Although there were many exciting moments, nobody likes to kiss their sister all evening. Only the final event featured a submission; it is was the promoter himself who tapped, to Danaher Death Squad standout Gary Tonon, via leg lock.
A submission-only event with one submission is doing it wrong. If Metamoris continues, the first they need to do is pay every last person. Second thing is a rules change.
