Following his first ever UFC loss, at welterweight to Nate Diaz, Conor McGregor said at the post-fight press conference he plans to move back to featherweight:
I think with a bit of adjustment, and the recognition that it must take more than one, more than two, more than three to put the heavier man away – I think if I go in there with that mindset at a heavier weight, I will do fine again, McGregor said. But I think next is probably go back down and defend the featherweight crown.
The popular Irish champ felt it was right to return to featherweight to remind them of what I achieved and what I’ve done to that division. He dismissed his immediate decision was driven by the potential loss of his title, as indicated by UFC President Dana White in the event of a McGregor win at UFC 196.
But as for his failed experiment, McGregor told MMAjunkie he had no regrets about the move. And despite his first setback, he was optimistic about returning in relatively short order.
I still feel UFC 200 is there for me, but I’ll go back and sit, he said of the July 9 pay-per-view in Las Vegas. I’m not cut. I’m simply heartbroken, and that’s it. I’ll pick myself up and we’ll figure it out in the morning.
