UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and the greatest boxer of his generation, Floyd Mayweather Jr., will box on August 26. McGregor is 28 and Mayweather is 40; time is an advantage. McGregor is an awkward Southpaw, and Mayweather struggled with Southpaws, a long time ago. And struggled may not be the right word to use for someone who never lost, who never even was knocked down a single time in 20 years. And Mayweather handled the best southpaw of his generation, Manny Pacquiao.

MayGregor is no meat and potatoes, no salad and greens. It’s all dessert, a great plate of flambeed bananas and creme broule and macaroons all slopped together. McGregor will make $75 million; Mayweather will make much more.

There will be a circus of traveling press conferences where McGregor will do his thing, and a side contest on the social network. That began with the announcement.

McGregor won the first round, 1,394,609 likes to 557,445. And he got a dig in, posting an image of Mayweather Sr as if he couldn’t tell the difference. Heh.

In Round 2, the pair posted workout clips at about the same time.

McGregor does some Touch Butt in the Park inspired warmups and hits the bag in a way that is not going to frighten Mayweather. In fact, there will be discussion in Mayweather’s camp on whether McGregor is playing possum, and is actually much better than that.

McGregor wouldn’t do that. Or would be?

McGregor was full of bombast – “I am boxing … The whole world’s going to eat their words … You’ve never seen these moves.”

By contrast, Mayweather was humble.

“I know I’m not the same fighter I was 20 years ago, I’m not the same fighter I was 10 years ago,” wrote one of his team at his direction. “As a matter of fact, I’m not the same fighter I was 5 years ago. I’m just an old legend putting in work in 16 oz gloves.
