The first scheduled Jose Aldo vs. Conor McGregor unification fight at UFC 189 in July was canceled when Aldo injured his ribs. So we have all been waiting a long time for it. However, Interim champ Conor McGregor, on a visit home in Ireland, told Severe MMA that it felt initially like next month’s fight was a little too soon.
The remarks came after McGregor was asked about Irish fans finding it difficult that the fight was scheduled so close to Christmas.
“I said it to them – it was a little to early,” said McGregor. “I only just fought, in July. I only just saved everybody’s ass, by showing up for that fight in July. I could have easily walked and cost the company $20 million in production, $7 million in gate, $40 million in pay-per-view. I could have cost them a lot.
“And then people that traveled and saved their money. I could have not showed up there (at his last fight in July). But I didn’t. I showed up. I fought. I blew it out o’ the water. And Then they booked me again for December.
“Initially I said to them, ‘It’s a little too soon.’ Not for me particularly, because I’ll go every week. If you cut out all the bulls—, if you cut out all the media obligations, I’d show up and go through the whole roster inside of four months. I’d whip every single one of them on that roster within four months, if you cut out all the other s—. If you just let me show up on weigh in day, and show up on fight night and fight.
“But there’s a lot more too it.
“I said to them, ‘It’s a little too early for Aldo.’ Because his ribs and his body and I just thought he’s going to rush into camp again, and it could hamper it, and he could pull out once again. But we’re getting close now. All signs point that he will show up. I hope he does.”
“Let’s see.”
“I’m hungry right now. I’m prepared to kill this man, and unify the belts, and then what will they have to say? We’ll see what they have to say after Jose falls… Jose is the No. 1 pound-for-pound. We’ll see what they have to say after Jose crumbles inside one.”
Jose Aldo fights Conor McGregor at UFC 194 on Dec. 12 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
