McGregor: F@$% politics, whiners, religion, and the queen

UFC interim featherweight champion Conor McGregor was spotted recently at a UFC event wearing a poppy. While to very nearly all of the world that might be nothing more than a barely noticeable fashion statement, for some vocal fans in Northern Ireland, it took on a greater meaning.
Wearing a poppy is in many locales a statement of remembrance for fallen soldiers. The symbol is particularly strong in the United Kingdom, so to some fans, it appeared as if McGregor was honoring the dead from the UK side of The Troubles, and not the fallen from McGregor’s native Republic of Ireland.

This thing is, wearing a poppy is simply a symbol remembering fallen soldiers. And that is all that McGregor was doing.
The fighter responded via Facebook.
I know where my allegiance lies and what I do for my country.
I don’t need a stupid little flower with a 100 different meanings to tell me if I do or do not represent my country.

Then some number of British fans took offense at the Facebook remarks.
