It’s been more than two years since Conor McGregor has had his hand raised in victory inside of the UFC’s famed octagon, but Dana White isn’t ruling out the possibility that the biggest star in company history won’t fight for a title in his next outing.
McGregor is currently on the mend, nursing a broken tibia suffered in a July loss to Dustin Poirier, but the famed Irishman gave a few interviews at this past weekend’s Bellator 275 in Dublin and indicated he could fight again as soon as this summer.
July seems OK for me, McGregor told Severe MMA.
UFC president White said he hasn’t yet had direct conversations with McGregor regarding his return but will be happy to do so once the former two-division champ is completely healed.
There’s a lot of variables that have to come together for him to come back and fight, White said. No. 1 is health, you know, and how’s his leg? And then once that’s 100 percent, then we’ll start to figure out where he goes. Because a lot of these – I mean, we have fights made all the way up to June 18 already, so once he’s 100 percent ready to go, we’ll get him figured out, and we’ll see what’s what with the lightweight division and we’ll get him figured out.
Currently, reigning UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira (32-8) is expected No. 1-ranked contender Justin Gaethje (23-3) at UFC 274, which takes place May 7 in Phoenix. McGregor (22-6) suggested Oliveira should scrap that booking and wait for him, instead, in what could potentially be a more lucrative booking.
While that’s not likely to happen, Oliveira has previously indicated he’s open to the idea of fighting McGregor, even if the Irishman is currently mired in a 1-3 stretch.
While it would be a difficult matchup to defend in terms of meritocracy, it’s certainly one that would deliver big in terms of pay-per-view buys, and White said he’s not willing to completely rule out the possibility.
It’s going to depend on who the champion is, White said. The champion has some say in that, too. Who’s going to be the champ when Conor McGregor comes back and what do they want to do? I mean, if you look at Oliveira, right, if it’s still Oliveira by the time he comes back, maybe Oliveira wants Conor. Who knows? I don’t know. We’ll see what happens.
