McGregor camp hires top boxing ref
Joe Cortez: “We’re going from A to Z, it’s something that you don’t learn overnight. But I’m pretty impressed with his learning and he’s not a difficult guy to work with.”

On August 26, UF lightweight champion Conor McGregor will make his pro boxing debut vs. the greatest boxer of his generation, Floyd Mayweather Jr. McGregor has brought in top boxers to spar, and they are also bringing in 2011 International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee referee Joe Cortez, who will be working with ‘Notorious’ for over a month.
They were recruiting around for a referee to teach them the rules on refereeing – the unified rules – to make sure that there’s no mistakes being committed the night of the fight, when he fights Floyd Mayweather on August 26th at the T-Mobile Arena here in Las Vegas, said Cortez to NBC Sports’ Helen Yee as transcribed by Milan Ordoñez for BE. So, I’m just instructing him on the dos and don’ts, to make sure he follows the rules to a tee.
We’re going from A to Z, it’s something that you don’t learn overnight. But I’m pretty impressed with his learning and he’s not a difficult guy to work with. He’s very easy, and he follows instructions very well, and I feel good he’s learning so quick.
He’s a sharp individual who is very athletic, has a lot of speed, has a lot of power, and I could tell you that he’s gonna be somebody to reckon with. He’s not gonna be an easy guy. He’s one of the best champions the UFC has ever had, and the MMA sport, so I’d say he brings a lot of activity, a lot of action to the sport.
It’s going to be very competitive. I think [McGregor and Floyd] are both gonna bring a lot to the game.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada on August 26, 2017.
