The biggest combat sports event in history, Conor McGregor boxing Floyd Mayweather, may take place in September, some 18 months after the Mayweather camp first floated the idea. McGregor is the biggest pay per view television draw in mixed martial arts history. Mayweather in the biggest PPV draw in boxing history, or any history. So as the old boxing expression goes, if it makes dollars it makes sense.

But it doesn’t. Under MMA rules, Mayweather has no reasonable chance. Under boxing rules, it’s only marginally less preposterous. It’s so unlikely that during a recent interview with FightHype.com, Floyd Mayweather Sr. challenged Notorious.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the greatest boxer of his generation, and arguably the greatest defensive boxer ever. His father was 28-6-1 as a pro before becoming a trainer and working with the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, B.J. Penn for a time, and, tempestuously, his son.

He don’t want that fight,” said the elder Mayweather, as transcribed by Jed Meshew for MMA Fighting. “Floyd’s gonna turn him upside down. That be like you and Floyd in the ring! He looks bad in the ring. That’s a done deal right there. They’ve already showed the best that he’s got.

He ain’t nothing but talk! I told them people on the TV already, forget about Floyd. Let’s throw Floyd to the side. Here I am, I’m a 64-year-old man and I’ll beat your ass. I’ll beat the s*** out of McGregor! Anytime he wants it, let’s go.

I’m telling you right now, he can do all the stuff he want to do but this guy don’t know nothing about how to get your body right and the amount of time and everything you’ve got to do, he don’t know nothing about that.

What’s more unlikely, that Conor McGregor beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. in boxing or that Floyd Mayweather Sr. beats McGregor? Throw in Conor’s dad Tony and you have a donnybrook.
