Mayweather Sr calls Maidana an MMA fighter

One of the oldest strategies in prizefighting is to box a fighter, and to fight a boxer.
In an interview before his fight with Floyd Mayweather Saturday night, Marcos Maidana offered a preview of what he was going to do.
I have to fight Mayweather with all my tools, just like the way he fights, a little bit dirty, but very intelligently, he said.
And he did. There was some holding, some rabbit punching, a big headbutt, and more. The shove to the ground would have been legal in MMA, but was obviously not effective. The knee to the face would have been legal in MMA and effective, but it missed. Ironically, the headbutt and rabbit punches were the most effective illegal moves Maidana did, but they would have been illegal in MMA, too.
Never the less, in a post fight interview, Floyd Mayweather Sr. termed
“I think it was a superb…” said Mayweather, before pausing. “I think it was a superb, masterful boxer, fighting with an MMA fighter.”
?”MMA fighter! He hit him in the balls, hit him all around, hit him in the back of the head, hit him with his head – butted him. Beat him in the back of the head. Man, c’mon.”
It is a shame that when good striking technique is shown in MMA, fans laud it for good boxing. However, when dirty moves are used in boxing, many fans ignorantly call it MMA.
