Mayweather manager: When McGregor touches people they fall

The primary goal in professional boxing is to punch someone in the head, rendering them unconscious. A clean shot can also result in lesser effects. Floyd Mayweather has never been knocked out. He has never even lost. But during the official MayGregor announcement media call, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe said that in his 49 wins, Money has been buzzed. It came up as Ellerbe was discussing when Team Mayweather first considered the contest.
“I can’t exactly remember the time frame,” said Ellberbe, as transcribed by Ryan Harkness for MMA Mania. “But the kid [McGregor] has made a lot of noise and I had watched the fight or something and I was telling Floyd, ‘This kid got a nice hand game.’ And Floyd said, ‘Yeah he do got a nice hand game.’ So again, this is a fight that Floyd is taking very, very seriously because we know that all it takes in boxing is one shot, and it doesn’t have to be a clean shot.
“A guy with that kind of power, he can nick you and you’ll be buzzed. There’s been a few times in fights in Floyd’s career that he might have been buzzed in a fight, but nobody never knew. And there’s been a couple times he’s been buzzed in a fight. So one thing about Conor McGregor we do know is that you have to pay him very, very close attention, because when he touches people, they fall out.”
MMA vs. boxing matchups are attractive to athletes from both disciplines. Boxers want an easy fight. MMA fighters want boxing money, with no loss to their personal brand. However, Ellberbe said the rest of the MayGregor card will be boxing.
“All boxing,” he said. “And we’ll put together a tremendous undercard, but that’s forthcoming. We’re very excited to be working, Steve, myself, Floyd; excited to be working with Dana and Conor on this tremendous event. This shit is going to be fun. It’s really going to be a lot of fun. I can’t wait to get started on this.”
