Gray Maynard said he was surprised to get the text telling him he’d face Roger Huerta next at UFC Fight Night 19 on Sept. 16 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
I was like, ‘that’s a weird name, but I’ll take it,’ said Maynard, who has notched five straight wins in the UFC. I was looking for somebody like maybe Diego (Sanchez) or Clay (Guida)… It’s cool though. I’m happy. He’s got a big name.
Maynard, 30, said he’s requested fights with Sanchez and former lightweight champion Sean Sherk on a number of occasions, but understands its all in the timing as he heads into his 7th bout of nine-fight deal he signed with the promotion after appearing on The Ultimate Fighter 5.
