KHON2-Hawai’i sports director Rob DeMello was in Las Vegas for UFC International Fight Week, and spoke exclusively with UFC president Dana White about what’s next for featherweight champion Max Holloway.

“Could you give us any update on what could be next?” asked DeMello. “He said yesterday he knows it’s not Hawaii. He wants to fight before the end of the year. Do you know who that could be and where it could be?”

White has a plan.Yeah, we’re looking at Frankie Edgar, but we don’t know where.

“Yeah, we’re looking at Frankie Edgar,” replied White. “But we don’t know where.”

White was asked if the title defense would take place in 2017.

“Absolutely,” he replied. “Hawaii has a history with Edgar. He’s the fighter that took the lightweight belt from Hilo’s BJ Penn back in 2009 ending the Prodigy’s four-time run as champ. Edgar defeated Penn again in the rematch in 2010, also winning the trilogy match in 2014.

Holloway has in fact been advocating for a fight with Edgar.

I’ve got two former champs under my belt,” said ‘Blessed’ to KHON previously. “It’d be nice adding another one under my belt. We’ll see what happens, you know, first thing’s first, I got to have that meeting and we’ll go from there. If they want to do it, let’s do it in Hawai’i. I know a place, a stadium, it’s very nice.”

As White noted the place and date are not set, but the league is plannijng a huge event at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 4. With Edgar being a New Jersey native, that would be a natural.
