Itsuki Hirata (6-1) is leaving no stone unturned ahead of the biggest fight of her career.
The MMA fighter known as “Android 18” will face heated rival Seo Hee Ham (25-8) in a high-stakes atomweight showdown at ONE Fight Night 8. The blockbuster event will broadcast live in U.S. primetime on March 24, and fans can watch for free with an Amazon Prime membership.
The winner will move a step closer to a ONE women’s atomweight world title shot, and in preparation for the monumental bout, Hirata left Japan for New York to complete her training camp in a bid to add to her arsenal.
Making the most of the knowledge on offer in the U.S., Hirata has been splitting her time among several locations in search of the best minds in the sport.
“Right now, I’m training at four different gyms: 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu, United MMA for striking, Brooklyn MMA for MMA, and Serra-Longo for MMA, and strength and conditioning in New Jersey,” she said. “I’ve been focusing on wrestling and grappling, just like the last time.”
Still only 23 years old, Hirata knows that she still has plenty to learn before she can become a complete mixed martial artist.
One of the areas she has wanted to develop even further is her wrestling.
The U.S. is a hotbed for wrestling, made even more popular through the NCAA. As a result, the country has an unparalleled knowledge base at its disposal.
After spending another camp tapping into that wisdom, Hirata is excited to show off her new skills against the veteran Ham.
“I acknowledge that while I come from a strong judo and grappling background, MMA is different from those sports. I feel like I still have a lot to learn when it comes to MMA grappling,” she said.
“I believe that I might be able to keep a position if I get it, but in terms of movement, I still have a lot to improve on. I’m currently focusing on improving my wrestling to compensate for that weakness, and I want to utilize the skills that I’ve been training during the fight.”
Though Hirata is soaking up high-level wrestling knowledge in the tri-state area, she has not forgotten her roots.
A lifelong judo practitioner, the Japanese rising star is also keeping those weapons sharp to maintain a well-rounded skill set.
“Since coming here, I’ve learned more wrestling-centered techniques that I think will be useful in MMA fights,” she added. “I’m currently training in wrestling, in addition to the judo skills that I already have. I think being skilled in both judo and wrestling will make me stronger.”
And Hirata will find out just how strong that mixture has made her when she meets Ham in the ONE circle at ONE Fight Night 8 this Friday night.
