UFC bantamweight Manvel ‘Manny’ Gamburyan has announced his retirement following a loss to Johnny Eduardo at UFC Fight Night 100 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
“This might surprise a lot of people, even my family and my friends,” he said to announcer Jon Anik. “I think this is it for me. I am going to call it a career probably.”
“It was a great career,” said Manvel the Anvil correctly.
Gamburyan retires with a record of 25-9 with one No Contest, across four weight divisions – bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight.
Gamburyan came to the USA from Armenia when he was 10 years old, and started playing Judo shortly afterward at Gokor Chivichyan and Gene LeBell’s Hayastan MMA Academy. He won multiple national junior titles in Judo and began fighting in MMA in 1999, when he was just 17 years old.
He entered the UFC in 2007 via The Ultimate Fighter 5 with a loss to Nate Diaz. He went on to win nine more in the UFC and WEC, against eight losses. Career wins include Cole Miller, Leonard Garcia, and Mike Brown. He lost a fight with Jose Aldo for the WEC featherweight belt KO on September 30, 2010.
Having lost back to back fights via TKO, at age 35, Gamburyan has made the sensible decision to retire.
