After Conor McGregor and Paulie Malignaggi sparred for the first time, the former two-weight world champion posted a message on his social network.
“Good rounds last night,” he tweeted. “My code is sparring details stay in the gym.”
Then they sparred a second time and McGregor or his camp posted misleading images, making it look like Notorious was getting the better of the exchanges. It was identical to the treatment that former world champion Chris Van Heerden received, and the response was predictably the same – these guys are fighters.
Van Heerden posted the entire video, not clips selectively edited to make McGregor appear competent. Malignaggi did not have any video, no one does, so he twittered bitterly for days.
Hate to say it but it's clear when I look back at my time there that there was an agenda from the start, too many clues. https://t.co/dxjLvu3Oyt

That kind of sparring is normal for boxers on a high level, I boxed many yrs so it's normal but to put a weird spin on things is unethical. https://t.co/rcUKRnakaN
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 4, 2017
I didn't get paid, I'm not worried about it though. I paid him with the ass beating he recieved from me on Tuesday lol https://t.co/HnsfUGKMKk
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 5, 2017
Theres no video because the UFC facility won't release it, theres a 24/7 surveillance camera in that gym. Only Conors photogs allowed in gym https://t.co/oaSucLEsdW
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 5, 2017
Honestly I felt he would put pics but just be respectful about it I didn't anticipate things like push downs insinuated as knockdowns really https://t.co/z5HYCWqbQC
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 5, 2017
Yea but this coming week I'll actually start to discuss a bit what happened Tuesday, he whimpers like a girl when he gets ripped to body lol https://t.co/lfcuILlubJ
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 6, 2017
Thats funny, Nate said Same thing? I wa under impression that maybe it was cause in MMA they don't throw to body much. https://t.co/2qQbtYbUKO
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 6, 2017
Truthfully I was tryin hard 2 not make him look bad but if u listen 2 me b4, the praise is hollow, there wasn't much substance 2 that praise https://t.co/X88XmfIi19
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 6, 2017
No genius I was talking about the first sparring and now I'm talking about 2nd sparring. U spar more than once in training camp. https://t.co/3HdSO178Rg
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 6, 2017
In the end, Malignaggi decided not to discuss the sparring session in technical detail.
I won't speak tactics of his, that I wouldn't do, I still have some ethics I'm not Conor but def will give the story straight about stuff. https://t.co/qjwVMN6n5I
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 6, 2017
I did that after Tues work, I suppose the ass whippin didn't suit him so he posted dumb pics again by Thurs while skipping sparring that day https://t.co/e4TuiN1TS9
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 6, 2017
I wouldn't say that, a guy who's been retired 4 months n jus got back in gym 2 spar with him was kickin his ass by second sparring sesh lol https://t.co/a3zpXvIKtX
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 6, 2017
Ya, he posts pics causing the media rush 2 come to me, if he wanted it so secretive he should keep it secretive himself, logical step right? https://t.co/1aeteCQ8hK
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 6, 2017
That was me trying to do my best to make him seem like he's making progress buddy, I can come out n be open now, good try though. https://t.co/Rcav4qGHqD
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 6, 2017
Thats me trying to do the ethical thing and play him up while I'm there, common sense will help u in life, please try n find some. https://t.co/EGddL72ENv
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 6, 2017
Whats a real fight? Cause where I grew up a real fight meant anything including splittin u with a baseball bat, keep twitter thuggin it lol https://t.co/c7Lf61hEzz
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 6, 2017
I agree except u don't do it on the back of those trying to help. Wasn't called for, hes great at marketing himself but ethics count. https://t.co/wH3nhzpmqq
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 6, 2017
This isn't a cartoon or a movie sweetie, nature dictates that kinda fight, that's why its even illegal for me to try n hurt you take a hike. https://t.co/aEn2VIoaCa
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 6, 2017

— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 6, 2017
When I look back at the experience as a whole, not just sparring but as a whole, yes there was definitely an agenda beyond shadow of a doubt https://t.co/x3IRuFXscO

Footage is not controlled by showtime they weren't allowed to record even 4 all access, only UFC PI surveillance cameras recorded this. https://t.co/GCKYqUk2ec
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 6, 2017
No there isn't. Conor doesn't allow any recording, that was another Photographer, Conor has 2 photogs snapping away every sparring sesh. https://t.co/fDTuvAp41f
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 6, 2017
They aren't allowed that is correct u clown without the makeup, but the surveillance (security) cameras in that gym are on 24 hours. https://t.co/PcwJQnedgp
— Paul Malignaggi (@PaulMalignaggi) August 6, 2017
No, the stills were on Conor's photogs, video wasn't recorded by anyone, no vid allowed but the gym has security cameras always recording. https://t.co/HKdP2EWH8x
