The Iron Hillbilly Fabio Maldonado had a fairly unique training regimen for his fight against Gian Villante at UFC Fight Night 38: Henderson vs. Shogun 2.

This was the fight I did the least physical preparation for in my career,” he told MMA Junkie. “If you do too much, you can be overtrained, so I did less of it. I knew that my thing is striking. That’s where I needed to solve this puzzle.

Somehow it worked, and Maldonado racked up some new records:

*Three-fight UFC winning streak is tied for the third longest in the light-heavyweight division behind champion Jon Jones (ten) and Glover Teixeira (five).

•132 significant strikes in his victory are the third most ever in a UFC light-heavyweight bout.

•72 significant strikes landed in Round 3 set a new single round for a 205-pound contest.

•59 significant strikes landed in Round 2 were the fifth most.

•132-to-33 significant strike advantage (+99) over his opponent is the second most in divisional history, behind CyrilleDiabate’s 146-to-28 advantage over Steven Cantwell at UFC on VERSUS 3.

•62 head jabs were also a new UFC light-heavyweight record.

•26 body shots tie his 26 vs. James McSweeney at UFC 120 as the most by a 205-pounder in a three-rounder.

AAANNNNNNNDDDDDDD, as UFC bantamweight conteder Urijah Faber pointed out, he bears a damn close resemblance to Edgar the farmer alien from Men in Black
