For the second time in a row, Rory MacDonald fought five rounds in a back and forth fight with a top welterweight. First it was a brutal five round war with champion Robbie Lawler and last night five rounds with Stephen Thompson who was undefeated in his last six Octagon appearances.

As the UFC Fight Night 89 main event progressed, Thompson began to show the effects of Thompson’s strikes and his face and nose were a bloody mess when the fight ended. He had previously broken his nose in the Lawler fight, but let it heal naturally.

Speaking to Fox Sports after the fight, MacDonald said he believes now he’ll have to look into surgery so that his nose won’t be an issue in future fights:

“Fifth round, during a trade, we were both trading a little bit. I don’t know what it was, I was just trying to throw combinations and duck my head but something landed and I felt the waterfall start. The familiar feeling,” MacDonald described at the post-fight press conference.

“I broke it actually a couple times before this fight. I have no idea. I gave it time, it kept breaking. I don’t know if surgery’s going to be the best route. I really just have to take time and at least I’d probably look into surgery, see if that can make it stronger because just time off didn’t do (expletive).”
