Chuck Liddell met Tito Ortiz in the Octagon twice, knocking him out at :38 of Round 2 in 2004, and at 3:59 of Round 3 in 2006. Ortiz had been on a five-fight win streak before the loss, and thereafter went just 1-6-1 in the UFC. Liddell had been on a six-fight win streak before the win, but thereafter went just 1-5.

However, while their UFC careers both went into a precipitous decline after their last fight, they went very separate ways thereafter. UFC president Dana White pushed his friend Liddell into retirement in exchange for a no-show desk job. Meanwhile, Ortiz went to Bellator and saw his career reborn. He crushed Bellator middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko, split decisioned fellow UFC vet Stephan Bonnar, lost a title fight to Liam McGeary, defeated fellow UFC vet Chael Sonnen, and retired.

Then the new UFC owners WME-IMG let Liddell go, and now he, too, is looking to fight again in Bellator. He recently took a publicity shot with Ortiz and posted it on his social network.

Ortiz shot the fight idea down, unkindly.

“I don’t need the money,” wrote Ortiz. “Suck that you need the money. I can lend you some cash if so.”

He then posted an old, old video of a disoriented, post-bender Liddell in an interview.

The Iceman was not impressed.

“We took the pic as requested by the media,” wrote Liddell. “You knew I was going to post it, u posed for it. I heard you changed for the better but with your lack of class and character i knew it was impossible. Some encouraged me to give you a shot saying Amber changed u. Judging from your tweet you’re still the same piece of s*** I’ve punked on numerous occasions. Now we know who the real trash was, you can’t blame @jennacantlose any more. Man up! Now let me borrow some money bitch ???? where should we meet up I need it soon!”

In a hugely refreshing move, Ortiz took the high road.

While the trash talk is fun, it cannot be forgotten that Chuck Liddell was pushed into retirement because he got knocked out brutally three times in row. And that was seven years ago. And when he talks now, he doesn’t sound quite right.
