The original plan was for Conor McGregor to fight for the UFC lightweight belt at UFC 198. When champion Rafael Dos Anjos was injured, McGregor fought and lost to Nate Diaz at welterweight.

Before McGregor lost, fighting in the welterweight division got fans thinking about a potential future showdown with champion Robbie Lawler.

Lawler recently appeared on the radio and spoke about a potential fight and was confident things wouldn’t have gone well for McGregor:

Speaking with WSB-TV in Atlanta, Lawler said McGregor should consider himself lucky he wasn’t the one standing across the cage on that March night.

Obviously, that was a big fight, Lawler said. He’s a big draw, but it wouldn’t have been good for him. … Because if I hurt him, I wasn’t taking his neck.

When asked for clarification of what he would have taken, Lawler gave a chilling answer.

His soul, Lawler said. I’m a lot different than most people. He found a way out and (Nate) Diaz took his neck and was nice to him.
