Lawler explains chilling remark about McGregor

‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler lived up to his nickname when he was asked if he was disappointed to lose out on a very loosely planned superfight with Conor McGregor. The Irishman sets notoriously high goals. He plans to make the top of Forbes Highest Paid Athletes list, next year. He plans to own boxing. And prior to his first fight with lightweight Nate Diaz at welterweight, McGregor planned to beat Nate, and then challenge Robbie Lawler.

“I wasn’t too worried about it,” said Lawler, as transcribed by Atlanta’s WSVB2. “Obviously, that was a big fight. He’s a big draw, but it wouldn’t have been good for him.”

“How so?” asked reporter Zach Klein.

“‘Because if I hurt him, I wasn’t taking his neck,” Lawler said.

“What were you going to take?” Klein asked.

“His soul,” said Lawler. “I’m a lot different than most people. He found a way out and Diaz took his neck and was nice to him.”

That got people twittering.

During a recent appearance on UFC Tonight, co-host Daniel Cormier asked Lawler about the quote, and if he was intentionally trying to be terrifying.

“Nah,” replied Lawler, as transcribed byJed Meshew for MMA Fighting. “I was just – he asked me a question and I was like, ‘why are you bringing this guy’s name up?’ It kind of irritated me so, I just told him what I thought about the situation and his last fight, and I don’t think he should be mentioned with me, because I’m not like everybody else. I’m a little different.”
