Last week on HDNet’s Inside MMA Cesar Gracie and student Nick Diaz stated that Diaz was uncertain about his MMA future, and wanted to try his hand and professional boxing, naming Fernando Vargas as a likely opponent. They went so far as to say that they had signed the confract and were jsut waiting for Vargas’s signature to seal the deal.
That fell through, reportedlty due to a medical issue on Vargas’s part, and a new name came up, former International Boxing Federation super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy. Jeff Lacy knew nothing about the match up, learning of it only when it appeared in the newspaper USA Today.
Honestly, I was a little stunned, Lacy stated. Nick has accomplished a great deal in mixed martial arts and is certainly one of the best in the sport, but getting in the ring with me for a boxing match is a path he needs to be very wary of taking. I’m willing to put it all on the line anytime, anywhere!
For the right price, I’m more than interested in heading to his turf and put my fist in his mouth and silencing him.”
In my opinion, Nick Diaz has the best boxing/striking skills in the MMA game today, said Lacy’s manager, Joey Gilbert. I’d love to see this fight take place in northern California, or… in Reno, Nev. Nick has a lot of fans around here.
BloodyElbow reached out to Lacy’s camp and asked what the purse split might look like? “As far as a purse goes, both men are accomplished fighters and champions, that is something we will have to sit down and negotiate. Caesar Gracie is a gentleman and knows the fight business, so I’m fairly certain neither he nor I will become the impasse should talks gain traction … Having not spoken to my client or anyone from Nick’s camp I think it would be irresponsible of me to pre-set terms, but if you’re asking me if I think (a 50/50 purse split) is fair, I certainly do … Who knows, maybe I seek counsel from Mr. Dana White.. he sure seems to have all the right answers lately…”
