Not all Jiu-Jitsu gis are created out of the same material and fabric; there are subtle differences and nuances. Certain gis are made out of a variety of different materials which influence its overall durability, shrinkage, and comfort during rolling.

Be sure to check out this breakdown to better understand what goes into the different gi weaves and material for your next purchase.

Jacket Construction

Single Weave
Typically these are the most affordable gis. They are the lightest and use the least fabric hence the price savings. The downside of the single weave is it isn’t quite as durable as other gi options.

Double Weave
If the single weave is the lightest then the double weave is the heaviest. As you probably guessed, it is essentially combining two single weaves. Due to the added weight, these gis tends to last longer and make it harder for your teammates to grip onto. The added material can make you overheat during training. It’s important to note this type of weave can be more abrasive to your skin.

Gold Weave
The gold weave is a blend between the single and double weaves. This weave has the lightness of the single weave but the durability of a double weave. The gold weave is a sturdy but light material and will hold up to the toughest training sessions.

Pearl Weave
The pearl weave is a hybrid between the single and a gold weave. These tend to be a popular choice for competition since they are made out of a durable fabric that is fairly breathable. Jackets made out of this weave is characterized by the tiny pearls or bumps in the fabric.

Bamboo Weave
Bamboo is a great fabric because it is a softer weave and unlike cotton, it doesn’t shrink after multiple washes. As an added bonus, these gis don’t take as many chemicals to manufacture. It’s less abrasive. Also, due to the material, the gi actually becomes softer over time, unlike cotton.

Hemp Weave
For those of you who are more eco-conscious, the hemp gi is a great choice. Hemp is durable and breathable plus it works to keep you cooler on the mat during the hotter months. Also, hemp is ideal for warm, humid climates due to its breathability, moisture absorption and is resistant to mildew.

Pants Construction

Ripstop
Ripstop material has become popularized due to it being hard to grip and tear, and it is long-lasting. These pants are recognized by the ripstop square pattern created by one set of thicker stitching woven through a grid over the smaller stitching. Ripstop is most noted for its ultra lightness and prevents rips and tears before they spread throughout the fabric.

Cotton
Cotton pants are strong and heavily textured. Cotton pants tend to last longer and are still widely preferred among BJJ practitioners. However, cotton tends to shrink over time and when they begin to fray they can rip easily.

Duck Canvas Cotton
Duck Canvas Cotton is a heavy, plain woven cotton fabric. Thanks to this tightly woven fabric it is waterproof and is resistant to wear and tear.
