UFC interim light heavyweight Jon Jones is likely the best fighter in mixed martial arts history. He could enjoy an incomparable level of popularity, but both his career and the size of his fanbase are diminished by a series of unfortunate incidents outside the Octagon.

Whatever impulses drive him off a cliff with regularity occasionally emerge on his social network. He characteristically then deletes the messages. However, we may now have a kinder, gentler Jon Jones.

Division champion Daniel Cormier and challenger Anthony Johnson fight at UFC 206, while Jones waits to find out how a PED test failure is handled. During a recent interview, the pair both called Jones irrelevant.

No, [he ’s not relevant] because he’s not fighting, said Cormier to TSN, as transcribed by Mike Bohn for MMAjunkie. What made him relevant was the fact that he could fight, and he could fight well. He’s not fighting anymore. He’s a normal guy that did a lot of things in the past. He’s any other guy that, at this point, is retired because he’s not in the game.

Johnson agreed.

When people ask me about Jon, they ask me like, ‘What’s going on with that guy?’ said Johnson. They don’t ask me about his athletic ability anymore and his greatness inside the cage, they talk about his problems outside the cage. Nobody’s perfect – we’ve all had our problems outside the cage. But his are just amazing.

So Jones blew up on Twitter last night, but it didn’t appear to cross any lines. It was kind of fun. Makes you want to see Jones fight again, sooner rather than later.
