Jones knee surgery successful
Jon Jones: “Earlier this week, I suffered an injury while training for the fight. I’m having surgery tomorrow and I’m focused on recovering as quickly as possible.”

Earlier UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones suffered a torn meniscus and sprained ankle while training with Alistair Overeem. The fight with Daniel Cormier was postponed from Sept 27 to Jan 3. Many fans, and Cormier, voiced the opinion that he should have toughed it out. Cormier noted that he himself took the fight with a knee injury that will require an operation at some point.
“I said from the beginning that Jon Jones isn’t afraid of anyone,” said Cormier. “But if I can go in there with a partially torn ACL, I think he should have fought. Tough it up and fight. I don’t know the extent of his injuries, and if it’s really bad, I’ll take it back. But on the surface, I heard he hurt himself. But people hear ACL, they think you’re out for a year. I’ve been hurt, and I’ve been training. I wish he would have just fought. I’m saying tough it out sometimes. Sometimes you’ve got to go in there and tough it out and just fight.”
However, the complaints should be quieted, as Jones is having surgery on Thursday. The announcement came via Facebook.
I’d like to apologize to all the fans who were excited for UFC 178. Earlier this week, I suffered an injury while training for the fight. I’m having surgery tomorrow and I’m focused on recovering as quickly as possible. I look forward to getting back in the gym and defending my title on Jan. 3 in Las Vegas.
Jones is out of the hospital, has his injured leg in a brace, and is using crutches. The fighter posted two post operation videos on Instagram.
Recovery from a meniscus operation is generally four to six weeks. However, the sprain is reportedly a worse injury that the knee, complicating his recovery. Further muddying the waters, Gustafsson wants to replace Cormier against Jones. Cormier was a replacement for Alexander Gustafsson, who himself injured his knee, requiring surgery.
Now that the fight is pushed to a date when Gustafsson’s knee will be healed, “The Mauler” is adamant that the fight should be his.
Alexander Gustafsson @AlexTheMauler
It was MY fight to begin with and I WANT the fight as the number 1 contender. End of story!!
Cormier was asked by a fan what he thought a potential switch back to Gustafsson.
@BigEPerez
Hey @dc_mma Idk if u heard but @AlexTheMauler wants your spot 4 #ufc182.
Daniel Cormier @dc_mma
No chance—
As UFC co-owner Lorenzo Feritta has said Cormier’s shot will remain, it will remain. Unless, there is another injury…
