When news came out Saturday that Jon Jones ran his car into a telephone pole at 5:00 am, and was arrested for suspicion of Driving Under the Influence, the sport collectively gasped. Then the reactions took off in myriad directions.
Some reacted with scorn that the very publically devoted Christian would behave so irresponsibly.
UFC President Dana White responded to TMZ who broke the story with Wow, i guess its not my week is it?
‘Divorced’ former teammate and arch rival Rashad Evans reacted with compassion. “I feel bad about the situation,” said Evans via Twitter. “I’m very happy no one was hurt & I’m sure this will b a big lesson 4 him! Best regards 2 him!”
Some reacted with humor.
“Pat HD barry > Jon DUI Jones. OOOH YES I DID!!!!”
This one came with the caption “An officer present stated that Jones refused to look directly at the camera….” (fake)
And there were the gifs.
Some car buff’s first thought was for his $250,000 2012 Bentley Continental GT.
This was not Jones’ first accident. In Jan of 2011 he twittered the image below with text: “I just got into a car accident, police said it wasn’t my fault.. I walked away without a scratch, GOD IS GOOD”
We can only imagine what Jones must feel like.
Jones was being built up as the face of the mixed Martial arts, and reading the quote below provides some insight into what Jones must feel like at this moment.
“I’m very comfortable with the UFC putting me out there and trying to use me as one of the guys to promote the sport and bring it to a new level. I think if I was a knucklehead and if I was a guy you had to worry about getting a DWI or going out and doing something really stupid, they simply wouldn’t promote me. I think they see the guy that I am, and they trust that. Even though I’m a 24 year old, I’m a trustworthy 24 yearr old.”
Probably the closest anyone came to a consensus statement was Dr. Johnny Benjamin who said “At the end of the day Bones injured his car, reputation and a light pole…actually a remarkably good outcome after a very poor decision.”
In Aug of last year, Rich Franklin said the only person who can beat Jon Jones is Jon Jones.
“I think the only person who can beat Jon Jones at this point in time is himself,” said Franklin. “He’s a young guy, the world is coming at him fast and I think his game is whether or not he can maintain focus.
“I remember the first time I met Jon in person … there was a group of fighters and I was walking up to the group and Jon’s back was to me. As I walked up to him I was looking at him and thinking ‘Who is this heavyweight?’ I kept walking around and around and I was like ‘Oh my word, he’s enormous!’ To kind of put things in perspective, he has an 84-inch reach. Tim Sylvia, who is four inches taller than him, has an 80-inch reach. To deal with that kind of reach is insane.
“I think if he can keep his head straight he’ll run that division for awhile.”
The final question thus is does this become a loss for Jones, or a lesson? Is this the beginning of his life spinning out of control, or was the car spinning out and into a telephone poll a growing experience, that leads ultimately to greatness?
Only time will tell, as it always does, and we’ll be watching.
