Johnson vs. Gustafsson official for January to determine no.1 contender

Today the UFC announced in an e-mail to the press that Anthony Johnson will square off against Alexander Gustafsson to determine the next number one contender.

When Daniel Cormier was booked to fight Jon Jones, the plan was to have Anthony Johnson fight Alexander Gustafsson to determine the next number one contender.

However, Anthony Johnson was suspended by the UFC when it was revealed he had a pending civil case involving a protection order. The UFC scrambled and then tried to make a bout between Rashad Evans and Gustafsson, but apparently Evans did not feel he could be ready in time for a January event in Stockholm.

Now earlier this week it was announced that Anthony Johnson’s civil case had been dropped and he would be allowed to return to the UFC. That opened the door for the original showdown between Johnson and Gustafsson:
