Veteran UFC fighter Anthony Johnson is on the cusp of another title shot in the light heavyweight division, but he’s already got plans to walk away from the sport.
I plan on retiring within the next, like, three years, Johnson told MMAjunkie Radio.
If successful in a title eliminator against Ryan Bader (20-4 MMA, 13-4 UFC) at UFC on FOX 18, Johnson (20-5 MMA, 11-5 UFC) could be close to where he was eight months ago, when he challenged Daniel Cormier for the vacant UFC light heavyweight title.
With ex-champ Jon Jones now reinstated and likely to meet Cormier in a fight between the division’s former and current champ, Johnson may have to wait for his turn. But he claims he will not delay when his time is up in the sport.
I want to live life without being worried about getting punched and getting up every day and losing weight and all of that craziness, he said. I love the sport and respect the sport, but I want to be able to sit back and have a family and enjoy life besides getting up every morning, having some other guy guy all up on top of me.
