In light of all the negativity pointed at judges, let’s take a look at a positive thing; Doc Hamilton’s half point system. I talke to Doc briefly at this last event, and he explained to me that California is going to be using it for amateurs, and if that goes favorably hopefully more states will pick it up and perhaps some will adopt it for professional fights.

I really appreciate that Doc recognized that there’s a flaw in the current judging system, and he spent a great deal of time crafting what he feels is a superior alternative. I love the fact that he’s so dedicated to the profession that he’s actively trying to improve it with his experience and expertise.

Doc is a life long martial artist, and he’s been an excellent judge as far as I can remember.

We talked about a great example of where this system would come into play, and that was the Rampage vs Machida fight. For anyone to have an advantage in the first 2 rounds it would have been very slight. That would award the winner with 1/2 point for each round. The 3rd round was a much better round for Machida, so that round would have been a 10-9 round.

If all 3 judges gave both the 1st and 2nd to Rampage by a slight margin of 1/2 point, then with the 3rd going to Machida for 10-9, that would be a draw.

His idea for settling a draw is to have a 4th judge that counts up damage and advantage points for the entire fight. He has a point system for counting hard blows, take downs, near submission, etc. They would count out that final points total and that would determine the winner.

Obviously this system needs to be implemented and studied before a final conclusion is reached, but I think it’s certainly a step in the right direction, and I think Doc should be applauded for his efforts to improve what we all feel is a flawed system.

Here’s an article on ESPN.com where Josh Gross goes into detail about it.
