Since the 1990s I have officiated 100s of mixed martial arts fights. A lot of people are interested in becoming an MMA judge or ref and the first thing I tell them is, “You better have a lot of friends already.”
That’s the thing about officiating, every fighter at one point or another, or many points, has blamed a loss on a judge or a ref. In the main event of UFC Fight Night 103 on Sunday night, BJ Penn argued that the fight was stopped too soon. But no one ever, ever, never, ever blames a judge or a ref for a win.
On Sunday, in yet another display of his towering character, Joe Lauzon blamed the judges for his win. Lauzon had just won a split decision via scores of 29-28, 29-28, and 27-30.
I disagree 100%,” said Lauzon of the decision. “I got screwed in my last fight and felt like the decision should have gone-went my way. This time, that was not my fight. That was 100% … Marcin’s fight. I disagree 100%. Not my night.”

In another display of his character, Lauzon holds the most post-fight bonus awards in UFC history with 15. Plus he holds the most Submission of the Night performance bonuses (6), and seven Fight of the Nights, a Performance of the Night, and even a Knockout of the Night.
Lauzon is 32 years old and has been fighting professionally for over twelve years. He has had 26 fights in the UFC. He has been alternating losses and wins in equal number since 2010. He will not fight forever.
When Lauzon does retire, the UFC desperately needs him. Make him Director of Integrity. Or Director of Awesome. Joe Lauzon is everything good about mixed martial arts. Do the right thing UFC.
With the loss, Held is now 0-2 in the UFC.
