Pulver suffered his fifth consecutive defeat and seventh in eight fight when he tapped out to Vazquez’s armbar 3:41 into the first round. Immediately after the bout, the always emotional Pulver said he could not see himself returning for another fight after 11 years as a mixed martial artist.
“It’s over,” Pulver said after his first-round submission loss to Vazquez tonight. “The vintage, the authentic. I don’t know many times I can cry in front of all of you.”
If Pulver truly retires, it would end a career that has touched several major points of MMA in the last decade. He became the first man to hold the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s 155-pound title, handed the legendary BJ Penn his first loss, battled other titleholders in UFC, Pride Fighting Championships and WEC across two weight classes, and led a team as head coach on Season 5 of The Ultimate Fighter.
