JDS: Werdum fought a different Velasquez than the one I did

“That’s unbelievable for somebody like him who fought 10 rounds with me, very hard. In the fifth round, the last round he was jumping like a kid so yea, that was strange.”

No one knows what it is like to fight former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez better than does Junior dos Santos. First he knocked Cain out in a minute. Then he lost after five ferocious rounds. And then he lost in the fifth.

During a recent English and Brazilian Q&A, JDS said that the Cain Velasquez who fell at altitude to Fabricio Werdum is not the same Cain that he faced. And he believes the next fight Werdum vs. Velasquez fight ends differently.

“Man, I think Werdum did well in their last fight but in my opinion he didn’t fight the same guy I fought, the same Velasquez I fought,” said JDS, as transcribed by David St. Martin for MMAFighting.

“Velasquez got exhausted in the first round. That was completely a big surprise for me. He was exhausted in the first round! That’s unbelievable for somebody like him who fought 10 rounds with me, very hard. In the fifth round, the last round he was jumping like a kid so yea, that was strange.”

“If Velasquez comes in in his normal conditioning, the normal way, I think he will win against Werdum.”

“Maybe Werdum is next. I don’t know. If he keeps the belt and I win my fight, it can happen.”

Junior dos Santos fights Alistair Overeem on Dec. 19 at UFC on Fox 17. The Werdum vs. Velasquez rematch is expected to take place in March.
