When the announcement was made that Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields would be taking a slot as an assistant coach on the newest season of TUF, Shields was simply helping out an old friend, and was happy to get the chance to coach the newest batch of UFC hopefuls.
“I’ve just been friends with Chuck for 10, 11 years now, and he was doing the show and asked if I wanted to come help and be a part of it. Of course I do want to help out Chuck.”
“I think people are reading way into it. People are like, ‘The UFC’s letting you do that? Strikeforce is letting you do that?’ It’s just a matter of Chuck’s my friend, and I was just going to help out, and get some training in Vegas. It’s nothing against UFC or Strikeforce. People act like it was a big deal. I never looked at it that way.”
“I think Scott Coker understands and Dana White understands. It was never an issue with Dana or Scott or anyone. It’s probably just people who like to get on forums and talk.”
“Every guy on the show is legit and they all came to fight. You look over the seasons, there’s usually one or two guys, but there’s a few guys here I think guys that will be forces to be reckoned with. This is one worth watching.”
When asked if by the end of the season if he hated Tito too, Shields tried to take the high road. “It’s funny you ask that today. I’m not going to comment. We got back and forth. Right now the answer would probably be yes. I’m usually cool with him, just not at the moment.”
