For the past few years MMA has gained much popularity over boxing in the world of sports entertainment, and yet top boxers out-earn the top UFC fighters by tens of millions. So why is this? Is Dana White too cheap to give his fighters what they deserve to make financially? I mean, guys in the UFC have taken some nasty punishment, and yet an average fighter may only make $50,000 for a fight?
Lets it break it down; in 2010 Georges St. Pierre, UFC welterweight champion and arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in MMA made around $900,000 in 2010, and keep in mind he fought twice. On the other side of things, Manny Pacquiao, world champion boxer made between $20-$25 million for his last fight against Antonio Margarito. That’s not a typo!
So in essence, GSP has to fight roughly 45 times to make what Pacquiao makes in a 45-minute fight, if it goes the distance that is. So despite how often Dana White goes on about how MMA and the UFC have trumped boxing, he will always be second best when it comes to paying out fighters what they are worth.
