When the UFC selected USADA to independently conduct performance enhancing drug testing for the league, one of the first changes was a prohibition on the use of intravenous therapy outside of required medical use. It had commonly been used to rehydrate after weigh ins, but it has also been used historically in multiple sports to mask PED drug use. Thus WADA prohibits any IV over 50 ml in six-hour period. The Nevada Athletic Commission has a similar prohibition.

Now MMAjunkie reports that the NAC alleges featherweight Kurt Holobaugh violated the prohibition following the weigh-ins for Dana White’s Contender Series on July 10, 2017. A hearing will held on Tuesday in Las Vegas during the NAC’s monthly meeting.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission has filed a disciplinary complaint against the featherweight, alleging he used an illegal IV following the weigh-ins for Dana White’s Contender Series 1 in July. NAC management analyst Nyra Phillips told Steven Marrocco that Holobaugh did use an IV in excess of 50 ml and that it was not done as part of a medical procedure, and not done with a Therapeutic Use Exemption.

Holobaugh’s manager, Brian Butler, disputes the charge.

Holobaugh could face a suspension of six months to two years if a determination is made that he violated the prohibition. As well, his win over Matt Bessette at DWCS 1 would be declared a No Contest. It is not known if Bessette would get another shot at DWCS, but in fairness, he should.
