Johny Hendricks was once the welterweight champion of the world, having won three Fight of the Night’ performance bonuses in a row, plus a KO of the night, with an exclusive Reebok deal.
Then ‘Bigg Rigg’ lost his title to Robbie Lawler via split decision. He bounced back with a unanimous decision over Matt Brown. But in February he got knocked out by Stephen Thompson in the first in a fight that looked like Mr. Miyagi vs. that gang of bullies in Halloween costumes. Hendricks fought Kelvin Gastelum in July, and lost that one too, via decision. And he missed weight.
Now Hendricks is 33 years old and ranked #7 in the division heading into his fight at UFC 207 with #9 Neil Magny.
Magny is coming off a KO loss to Lorenz Larkin in his last fight, but was on a three-fight win streak before that, over Erick Silva, Kelvin Gastelum, and Hector Lombard.
Hendricks appeared recently on ESPN’s Five Rounds podcast and said if he loses at the New Years Eve show, he’s done.
The last two I have lost, fair and square, I know I have, said Hendricks, as transcribed by Jesse Holland for MMA Mania. Realistically, if I go out there — and hey, crazier things have happened — I go out there and lose, that’s when it’s time to say ‘I’m done.’ I’m not gonna keep fighting to hopefully find a person I can beat.
Johny Hendricks fights Neil Magny at UFC 207: Nunes vs. Rousey, on December 30, 2016, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
