When it was abruptly announced without explanation that Hector Lombard vs. Rory MacDonald was removed as the UFC 186 co-main, fans assumed it was due to injury. However, no explanation was what so ever was given, which was unsettling.

Now Ariel Helwani working for MMAFighting.com has obtained documents from the Nevada State Athletic Commission revealing that Lombard failed a UFC 182 drug test.

Lombard, 37, tested positive for the designer anabolic steroid desoxymethyltestosterone, know by users as DMT.

The NAC reportedly received the test results on Jan 13. It is not clear why they declined to publicly or privately announce the results. MMAJunkie reports that NSAC Executive Director Bob Bennett attributed the one-month delay to a lack of inquiry from MMAjunkie. That statement does not clear up why the results came in on Jan 13, why the UFC was apparently never informed (and announced the fight with MacDonald on the 17th), why they didn’t get the information out until today, and why they never informed Lombard. There may very well be rational explanations for all of this, but right now the only thing there is with certainty is a lot of questions.

In December the NSAC committed what they called an “administrative oversight” testing UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones out of competition for recreational drugs not prohibited by WADA. That one too raised questions, that are not answered in the two words “administrative oversight.”

It is now abundantly clear that the UFC has a major problem with PED use, and that their funding of AC efforts to catch it through comprehensive, out-of-competition testing is proving to be effective.

The UFC is now seeking new options for MacDonald.
