During UFC Fight Night 72 event, it was announced that UFC light heavyweight Cormier make his first title defense against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 92 in Houston on October 3. The fight and date had been rumored for some time.

Cormier is coming off a win over Anthony Johnson ay UFC 187 on May 23, 2015, earning the belt vacated by Jon Jones. Curiously, Gustafsson is coming into the title shot off a loss, to Johnson at UFC on Fox: Gustafsson vs. Johnson on January 24, 2015.

Rashad Evans and Ryan Bader will also fight each other on the card. The winner of that fight may get the following title defense.
