On Saturday UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley will fight challenger Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson for the second time. The greatest champion in division history, Georges St-Pierre, will be watching with interest. However, GSP is not watching necessarily with an eye towards fighting the winner.
St-Pierre and Thompson are friends and training partners. GSP has finalized negotiations with the UFC and is poised to return, but has spoken of challenging UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping, who is eager for the fight, UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, who wants to box Floyd Mayweather, and Anderson Silva, the greatest fighter in UFC history.
Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson is a good friend of mine and also one of my best training partners, said St-Pierre says in the video. He has the tools to become champion. It’s only a matter of time for him and he’s getting better every day.
I called him before a ‘secret weapon.’ But now he’s not a secret weapon anymore. … Wonderboy is the best striker I’ve seen in my life.
Stephen Thompson fights champion Tyron Woodley in the main event of UFC 209, on March 4, 2017, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
