GSP interested in fight with Tyron Woodley
GSP says YES to champion CALL OUT
Both UFC management and then contender Tyron Woodley determined that the best course of action would be to keep the fighter in reserve for a title shot. So as the shark-deep division churned in a frenzy, Woodley didn’t fight for 18 months.
Woodley’s choice turned out to be wise. He beat Robbie Lawler in the first round. Then Woodley made another wise choice. Rather than start the trash talk with #1 contender Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, Woodley said the career of a fighter is short, and that he wanted money fights – fights that will put asses in seats in front of a PPV television, with Woodley getting a cut.
He named the opponents – the league welterweight G.O.A.T. Georges St-Pierre, and fan favorite Nick Diaz. And for Diaz at least, Woodley wants the fight immediately, at the next PPV, UFC 202 on August 20, 2016 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Nick’s brother, lightweight Nate fight UFC featherweight champion Conor McGegor at welterweight in the main event.
Nick Diaz would take that fight, although perhaps not on three weeks notice.
St-Pierre, now 35, has not fought since November of 2013, after a break from various rigors of not just the sport, and not just being champion, but one of the greatest champions of all time. There was doubt that GSP would take the fight; he has said that upon his return he was more interested in superfights than in reclaiming his belt.
However, Ariel Helwani for MMA Fighting reached out to GSP, and got a short but emphatic reply.
When contacted on Sunday about whether he would be interested in fighting Woodley, St-Pierre replied, via text message, “Yes.” Asked again whether he wanted the fight, St-Pierre replied, “Yes.”
