Gonzalez: I didn’t want to be talked about like this
Pearl Gonzalez: “I don’t think I wanted the world to know about my surgery and to be talked about like this.”

For the fourth event in a row, the New York State Athletic Commission has operated in a baffling manner. This time, Daniel Cormier was allowed to cheat in plain view, and Pearl Gonzalez had personal medical information disclosed to the entire MMA fanbase.
A 2014 regulation, for boxing, enacted before the state regulated MMA, says that female boxers cannot have breast implants. Gonzalez disclosed the breast augmentation surgery on her paperwork, and completed weigh-ins successfully. And female fighters with breast implants have fought for the UFC in New York before. However, Gonzalez was singled out by the NYSAC and told her fight vs. Cynthia Calvillo on the main card of UFC 210 was off.
Eventually, rationality returned and the fight is now officially on, but in an interview with Ariel Helwani, Gonzalez was not impressed.
They just said breast implants were not allowed in this state, said Gonzalez, as transcribed by Dave Doyle for MMAFighting.com. And I was a little, you know, appalled and I said ‘okay, can I talk to my team?’ and the commissioner said ‘yes,’ and I walked out of the room and that was that.
I’ve never heard of such a thing. I’ve put it in my paperwork, I’ve never lied about it, which is when they asked me if I had a surgery, I told them.
I don’t think I wanted the world to know about my surgery and to be talked about like this. I have worked very hard to show how talented I am. I have a lot to bring to this division. And that’s what I would like to be known for.
All media is good media. So I’m going to ride this wave, and if this helps get me name out there, I’m going to ride it. I’m gonna win tomorrow night. I’m going to show the world not only do I have breast implants, but I’m a talented fighter.
