The outlines of Mike Tyson’s entry to boxing are well known. He never knew his biological father, and the man he knew as his father disappeared from his life around the time he was born. By the time he was 13 Tyson had been arrested 38 times.

He was sent to Tryon School for Boys in Johnstown, New York where a counselor and former boxer Bobby Stewart taught him the fundamentals of boxing. In the biography “Bad Intention” author Peter Heller relates that the first time Tyson got on a weight bench, he could do 250 ten times. He was 200 pounds, 5′ 8″ and just 13 years old.

Recognizing his potential, Stewart sent Tyson to genius, eccentric boxing trainer Cus D’Amato in Catskill, NY. When Tyson’s mother Lorna died at age 16, D’Amato legally adopted him.

On November 22, 1986, Tyson stopped Trevor Berbick in the second for the World Boxing Council heavyweight championship. At the age of 20 years and four months, he was the youngest heavyweight champion in history.

Like many fighters, UFC light heavyweight Glover Teixeira idolized Tyson growing up. Teixeira lives in Connecticut now, not far from where Tyson got his start. In this brief profile, Teixeira and his wife discuss journeying to Catskill to see if the legendary Cus D’Amato’s KO Boxing Gym still exists.

Glover Teixiera fights up and coming Jared Cannonier on the main card of UFC 208 on Saturday, live on pay per view.
