GLORY 83 took place Saturday night, February 11, from the electric Grugahalle in Essen, Germany and it proved to be another action-packed evening with nine bouts in total.
The main event saw Suriname’s Donegi Abena finally capture a GLORY title on the third time of asking. There was some controversy, however, as the bout ended due to doctor stoppage.
Abena checked a kick from Sergej Maslobojev which resulted in his shin to split open and start bleeding. As a result, the ringside doctor stepped-in, examined the cut, and ruled Maslobojev unfit to continue, much to the dismay of the Lithuanian. Both fighters are now even with one win each over the other.
In the co-main event, GLORY middleweight champion Donovan Wisse made it seven wins in a row with a unanimous decision victory over top ranked Cesar Almeida. The fight was changed to a non-title bout and contested over three rounds after the Brazilian missed weight. Wisse once again proved he is one of the best kickboxers on the planet today.
Turkey’s Serkan Ozcaglayan added another highlight finish to his resume with a KO win over Germany’s Sergej Braun. Afterwards he dedicated his win to the victims of the devastating earthquake that has affected his home country. The No. 2-ranked middleweight then declared himself as the next in line for the GLORY middleweight title.
GLORY No. 2-ranked lightweight Guerric Billet used his thumping low kicks to earn a hard-earned decision win over the number 5 ranked Cihad Akipa. The French star then called for his shot at the GLORY lightweight championship.
Ahmad Chikh Mousa and Berjan Peposhi had the entire crowd on its feet from beginning to end in a thrilling contest. It was the German who got the unanimous decision win after an incredible final round that saw him score a big knockdown.
Elsewhere on the card, Dutch Moroccan Nabil Khachab won the battle of the giants with a decision win over Uku Jürjendal, Robin Ciric got his first victory in GLORY and beat Jos van Belzen in a top-class all-Dutch affair, Germany’s own Chris Wunn moved to 2-0 in GLORY with a decision victory over France’s Jonathan Mayezo, and in the opening bout of the evening, Armenia’s Arman Hambaryan survived a late onslaught from Sorin Caliniuc to hand the Romanian his first pro loss.
