With Dominick’s Cruz return, he has solidified himself as the undisputed top man in the bantamweight division and is the current champion. Since returning, he has defeated TJ Dillashaw and Urijah Faber, the two other top contenders in the division.
But as it goes in the UFC, there is always another contender working his way to the top, and Cody Garbrandt is that man in the bantamweight division. Garbrandt is undefeated in professional mixed martial arts and a perfect 5-0 in his UFC career, including four knockouts of technical knockouts.
Most recently, Garbrandt tore through Takeya Mizugaki at UFC 202, defeating the top bantamweight in forty eight seconds at UFC 202.
Now he has his sights set on a UFC title fight and believes he is the man that can finally hand champion Dominick Cruz his first loss in the Octagon:
Three first-round finishes, Garbrandt said. I don’t see any other bantamweight doing that. Obviously if the champ wants it, I want the fight, the fans want it. I believe I deserve a title fight.
UFC officials have yet to make an announcement on Cruz’s next appearance, but he sat in the building on Saturday night as a member of the broadcast team and indicated he’s willing to take the challenge.
Garbrandt hopes it’s not a bluff, and he also believes it will ultimately prove to be the champ’s undoing.
I find his chin, and I’ll have the belt, Garbrandt said.
