After 29 fights, on Saturday night at UFC 222, featherweight Frankie Edgar suffered his first knockout loss, falling to Brian Ortega at 4:44 of Round 1. Edgar’s style more than any other in the sport is founding on coming off the canvas to win. He will doubtless do it again, albeit not as quickly as his vast fanbase has come to expect.

The former lightweight champion recently issued his first public statement via his social network.

“Saturday did not go as planned, congrats to Ortega he definitely got me with some good ones,” tweeted Edgar. “Thanks to all my peers, my team, my friends, and my fans for their nice words, they don’t go unnoticed. All I can do now is dust myself off and get ready to put it all on the line again.”

Edgar is one of the few, perhaps the only fighter in the league without any detractors. There was overwhelming sympathy for the fighter following his loss. And all the more so given the circumstances surrounding the fight.

Edgar was scheduled for a title fight vs. division champion Max Holloway; when Blessed was injured, rather than wait for the championship fight, Edgar accepted an offer to entertain the fans vs. Ortega. At the age of 36, Edgar will now have to fight his way back to title contention.
