Weigh ins at the highest level of the sport have evolved into a event on their own, with crowds approaching 10,000 at the largest events to watch the fighters weigh in, face off, and square up. Meanwhile, at Universal Reality Combat Championship in the Philippines, first time fighter Kiko Matos sprayed pee at fellow novice Baron Geisler.
“Baron, drink my piss,” shouted Matos, as transcribed and translated by Rappler.
Geisler replied later on his social network.
“If you rained pee on me today, I’ll rain punches on you tomorrow,” he promised.
The MMA fight was made after the pair got in a bar fight that went viral. Neither fighter has any experience in MMA. Baron did Taekwondo, but quit when he was 12. Kiko reportedly has spent some time in a boxing gym.
The territory marking was apparently in response to an altercation at a press conference on June 21, when Geisler kissed Matos. When asked to explain his motivation, Geisler said, “he wanted it.”
“He said anytime, anywhere,” continued Geisler. “We were face-to-face, and he didn’t kiss me… I’m very comfortable with my sexuality. So maybe he’s not. Maybe he really wanted to kiss me. It looked like he was happy about it in the video.”
Matos too offered an explanation, for the pee.
“It’s like this, you have to be first,” he said. “You might get beaten to it. I just beat him to it. He got to me first with the kiss, right? So whatever he does, at least I was able to think of an idea.”
Matos was asked if the pee was fake.
“No,” he replied. “Do you want me to get the bottle?”
The pee-er’s remarks were echoed by the pee-ee.
“Yeah, it’s crazy,” said Geisler. “I should really shower after this, I’m sorry.”
URCC founder Alvin Aguilar said in a published statement that it wasn’t pee.
“Trust me, if it was, Kiko would definitely be hearing from all of us,” said Aguilar. “I would never allow a sick display like that from any of our fighters even if they were just in an exhibition bout. If that was really urine that would be unacceptable and I would pull Kiko out.”
The promoter also said he hope the fight would turn the bad situation into something positive, and that proceeds would go towards the fight to free political prisoners like MariconMontajes, a student from the University of the Philippines who has been detained for over two years.
These things happen in mixed martial arts. And the great pee/not pee debate continues without resolution.
The fight, incidentally, ended in a draw.
