The practice of traditional martial arts often centers of cultivating the essential elements of good character including honesty, dignity, courtesy, tenacity, and humility.

To all those whose progress remains hampered by ego-related distractions, let humility – the spiritual cornerstone upon which Karate rests – serve to remind one to place virtue before vice, values before vanity and principles before personalities,” explained legendary 19th-century Karate grandmaster Matsumura ‘Bushi’ Sokon.

Lessons in humility are sometimes inadequately cultivated in mixed martial arts. The results can be, well, humiliating.

At British Challenge MMA 18 in Colchester, England on Saturday night, amateur featherweight Joe Harding zigged when he should have zagged. Harding showboated, breaking out a little break dance. Opponent Johan Segas was not impressed and expressed his feelings indelibly.

Michael ‘Venom’ Page looks impressive when he pulls off similar antics and then knocks his opponent out. When Conor ‘Notorious’ McGregor clasped his hands behind his back vs. Eddie Alvarez and then took his belt, it was extraordinary.

But you have to win. And no one wins all the time in mixed martial arts. There is no Floyd Mayweather with dozens of wins at the world championship level. So the best bet may be to stay humble.
