The list of prohibited performance enhancing drugs continues to evolve, most recently around the controversial drug Meldonium. It was added to the prohibited list on Jan 1, but questions have arisen about it’s efficacy, and around how long it stays in the system.
Both Islam Makhachev and Abdul Kerim-Edilov tested positive, and were pulled from fights, but are now eligible to fight. And now heavyweight Daniel Omielanczuk has been flagged by USADA for Meldonium, barely two weeks from his fight with OleksiyOliynyk, but he will not be pulled.
Via UFC.com:
The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) informed Daniel Omielanczuk of a potential Anti-Doping Policy Violation involving Meldonium, a prohibited substance on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List. USADA further informed UFC that due to recent WADA statements regarding the handling of Meldonium cases, they will not be issuing a provisional suspension to Omielanczuk at this time. Accordingly, Omielanczuk has not been removed from his scheduled bout against AlexyOleinik in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on July 13, 2016.
It is reassuring to see USADA take a provisional view on a banned drug, as questions about it arise.
