Since Ronda Rousey lost two fights, there was been a radical reassessment of her skills by many fans, loosely defined. To many armchair MMA devotees, a single loss means a fighter sucks. Two losses means they are contemptible.
Ronda Rousey was as cocky as a pioneering champion, and thus bears some of the responsibility for the backlash. But she was also kind and generous to many. In short, she was a person.
A video mocking Rousey’s boxing skills appeared on the Internet. It has over 6,000,000 views.
Former UFC bantamweight and current Invicta FC featherweight Peggy Morgan was actually there when the shadowboxing clip was shot, and offered some perspective, via Facebook.
“This keeps showing up all over my timeline as evidence of Ronda’s s****y striking,” wrote Morgan. “I remember this because I was there and actually saw her doing it. She wasn’t warming up for a fight or like consciously making an effort to shadow box. She was absentmindedly throwing some punches while talking to Jessamyn, who was cutting weight for her fight against Raquel.
“Now I’m not saying that Ronda is an amazing striker, but I am gonna say that treating this clip as an accurate representation of her striking ability would be like if I found a clip of you dancing to the f***ing wiggles with a group of toddlers and then used it as evidence of what a s****y dancer you are. Also, it’s lame to pick other people apart like that. Go create beautiful things and enjoy life and make other people happier.”
