Derek W. Tomchek, 32, passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva. He was born June 8, 1979, in Elk Grove Village, Ill., the son of William and Evelyn (nee Whitaker) Tomchek.
Derek attended St. Charles North High School, Class of 1999. He served his country in the Illinois Air National Guard, Air Force Security Police and later as a federal law enforcement officer with the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.
Derek’s passion for Brazilian jiu-jitsu/mixed martial arts led him to compete professionally in the sport, and in recent years, he was a BJJ/MMA instructor and team captain, owner, and head coach of Team Tomchek MMA.
He was a devoted, lifelong fan of the Chicago Bears.
He is survived by his three children, Madison (9), Chloe (6) and Macklen Tomchek (1); his fiancee, Kelly McCarty of Sugar Grove; mother, Evelyn Tomchek of Middletown, Del.; father, William Tomchek of St. Charles; sisters, Danya (Ted) Davis of Middletown, Del. and Cara (Jay) Steinmetz of Geneva, Ill.; paternal grandmother, Helen Tomchek (nee Barron) of Newport News, Va.; and many other dear family members and friends.
